Progeria is a rare genetic disorder that causes children to age rapidly. The chances of being born with Progeria are 1 in 8 million. Babies born with this disease appear normal at birth, but symptoms start to show within their first year, such as slow growth and hair loss. Children with Progeria often show symptoms of thin, wrinkly skin, visible veins, and a high pitched voice. Progeria is caused by the gene LMNA, and is not passed down through families, but is rather a genetic mutation while the baby is still developing. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Progeria, and most children with the disorder die around the age of 13 from heart failure or strokes.
