Anencephaly is a very serious birth defect in which a baby is
born without a spinal cord, and parts of their brain and skull. Babies with this condition are missing their forebrain and cerebrum, as well as the top section of their skull. When they
are born, they are usually blind, deaf, and unconscious. It is caused when the neural tube connected to the baby does not completely close. About 1 in every 4,859 babies in the United States is born with Anencephaly. There is no cure or treatment for the
disease, and most children with this condition will die immediately after birth.
